Tav·ern (t v rn). n. 1. An establishment licensed to sell alcoholic beverages to be consumed on the premises.
Such is the brief definition offered by Merriam-Webster. So Norman Rose Tavern in downtown Napa has fit the bill fine since opening in late 2009, offering a good selection of beers and wines at its two bars flanking the dining room. Though anyone wanting a stiffer quaff has been out of luck.
But “beverages” is now better for the Rose, with the addition of a full liquor license, meaning imbibers can get their favorite hard spirits, too. Check out the new specialty cocktails, like The Stormin’ Norman, a twist on the classic Dark & Stormy, featuring Knob Creek bourbon instead of rum, splashed with bitters, ginger beer and lime ($11), or The Franklin, which mixes Zaya rum, grapefruit bitters, grapefruit, lime and Aperol ($11).
Folks can eat and drink later, too, as the Tavern has extended its hours on Friday and Saturday, serving the full menu of American comfort food until 10 p.m., and a late night menu until 11 p.m.
Slide in for burger sliders topped in pepper jack and avocado relish ($11), spinach and Sky Hill goat cheese dip ($10), smoked salmon and truffled egg salad toast ($11), and fries in a variety of recipes like “disco,” smothered in sausage gravy and cheddar ($8).
